It has been what? over a year - probably nearly two years - since I have posted on vox or any other blog.
And rather significantly (or not, you decide), today is the last day of 2009. At least in my time zone.
As you can see if you scroll down, my last post to the world was in fact a declaration of a loss of faith in the ideals and the afflictions that come with being lolita. In my time away, if its not too corny, my rite of passage - no...that is too corny - my time away, I learnt something very important.
Lolita, in the end, is a way of life (I've always upheld that view, even against chauvinistic imbeciles who call it cosplay) - but it is not a definition of who you are.
I repeat: Lolita is a way of life, but it does not necessarily define you as a person.
Let's take a random character called Alice (lack of imagination, sorry). Alice is a lolita. But Alice doesn't always like things covered in lace. And in fact, Alice doesn't like deserts at all, or Malice Mizer, or bubblegum pop. Alice likes her sodium, and she likes her grunge rock. These things don't mean that Alice cannot be a lolita. It just means she is so much more than just a lolita.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that while Lolita was created to embrace individuality and to show that you are 'different' and 'unique', it has become more and more like a stereotype - and worse than that, sometimes in order to be a good Lolita, one who follows correct etiquette and rules - you begin to lose that individuality that made you love Lolita in the first place.
I don't know about you, but I for one cannot stand the rule that tells you not to "strike back" if someone is hurtful or rude to you. I love nothing more than to shout at them and a little pounding never hurt anyone.
So after two years, I come back a happier and a more normal person. I don't dress up to go out anymore (not in Lolita anyway), nor do I attend/hold tea parties and all my dresses hang lifelessly in my closet.
I wonder if you guessed, but "Alice" is me. In my time away, I've learned to accept and love things that are not in the least related to Lolita. Sometimes we are just a little too blind to see what else is out there. E.g. for the sake of tea-parties, we might not learn to love coffee etc (I still can't drink coffee, btw). So...I have a few confessions to make.
1. My music has been infiltrated by kpop. And a short while ago, I liked DBSK more than AKFG. (no longer the case. Proud of me? ^^)
2. I've never liked Malice Mizer or Moi dix Mois, and I don't know what I was thinking when I used to look up to Mana. Because actually, he's downright creepy. (Please, please, don't kill me, its only personal opinion. But think about it. You know in your heart I'm right.)
3. I enjoy going down to the local supermarket in ripped jeans and a baseball cap. And I don't really care if I tan or not anymore.
4. I've never liked tea parties much. Why? Insects and grass stains.
5. I very much enjoy cursing. I believe our lives are enriched with the occasional "for f&#$'s sake".
But it doesn't matter. Because I am still "Sakuya" and I am still Lolita. Even if you can't see it. Even if others can't see it, I know its there.
So children, learn that you are you, before you are a lolita.
After all, a lolita doesn't need to shout to be heard.
Lolita are meant to be perfect. The human equivalent of dolls. We are essentially meant to resemble living porcelain dolls, which means that perfect procelain skin. No matter what lolita you are, be it Sweet or Classic or Gothic like me, the skin is a very important part.
Unfortunately, unless you are some lucky lucky lucky person who won the genetic lottery and physically dont undergo any acne in puberty, we have a problem.
I dont want to start sounding like a skincare ad. nor do i want to offer crazy home remedies - personally, the raw egg thing smells too bad.
However, i do have a few tips from my own experience - feel free to add your own in the comments. I have added the products i use, but dont feel pressured to buy them, if you prefer to use others, go ahead. I'm not working for Neutrogena, by the way XD, i just prefer it for its price and effectiveness.
This post goes through how to clear your skin from an initial routine to regular. Weekly rituals and whitening ideas (for the porcelain effect.)
You will need (depending on price range and skin type)
- Face Cloth
- Cleanser - cream or specifically for acne if neccesary (i prefer to use Neutogena Acne Wash)
- Moisturizer or Lotion - preferably one for day with SPF 15+ and one for night. (i use Neutrogena 'Healthy Skin face lotion' and 'Healthy defense daily moisturizer'.)
- Spot Gel - really good for any blemish and clears acne very well (Neutrogena Rapid Clear spot gel)
- Exfoliant - Once a week, twice if you have coarse skin. Dont overdo it. (Sense rice bran exfoliator)
INITIAL DAILY ROUTINE
This is what i used to do when i first began, but you only need to do this for the first two weeks or so, your skin should improve rapidly, then you can move to the next routine.
1. Soak the face cloth in warm-hot water and rinse face. It will also help to leave the hot towel on your face for a while to open your pores for more effective cleansing.
2. While your face is still damp with the warm water, lather the cleanser onto your skin and massage all over face. Rinse.
3. Use lukewarm water and massage your face with your clean fingers in upwards circular motions. Doing this regularly will help with blood flow and create a better overall complexion.
4. To create a flawless look, you need to close your pores. You can either fill a basin with cold water and stick your head in, holding your breath, or get some ice cubes from the freezer and rub them over your face.
5. Wipe off any water and squeeze out some moisturizer. massage into the skin - dont use too much or your skin could feel oily. Just use enough for it not to feel dry.
6. Using a q-tip, use a little of the spot gel on each individual blemish. I find that the gel works most effectively if you dont rub it in, but instead leave a bit of the gel on it. This is gonna tingle - dont touch it.
This should be enough for the first two weeks. providing you keep it up, and the quality of your skincare is assured, your skin should improve rapidly. Make sure that you always end with cold water - this closes your pores to make sure that no dirt will get inside and create more acne. WARNING: i dont suggest that you mix lots of brands together, it could be ok with upscale cosmetics, but not the cheap ones. this could scar your skin or worse.
REGULAR ROUTINE
After the intensive first two weeks, you can either continue as usual or simply opt to:
1. Rinse with warm water
2. Lather and massage cleanser into skin, rinse with cold water.
3. moisturize
4. Treat the spots.
this is actually pretty much what you essentially have to do. Good for if you dont have much time. The initial stage should have gotten rid of most of the problems, so keeping this up ought to be enough to maintain your good skin. If at any stage it starts going south, just go back to the first stage.
WEEKLY ROUTINE
The best way to create the porcelain skin is to exfoliate the dead skin cells away. this can be done up to three times a week depending on how strong your exfoliant is. I prefer to use a natural rice bran one, use for only once per week - check the details on the bottle.
this is what i do when i have a spare moment every week.
1. Use the same hot towel technique. if you have time, boil some water and hang your head over it, use a towel to cover your head and the pot of water. the steam will open your pores.
2. Use your everday cleanser as normal. Rinse with warm water
3. Using the washcloth, gently massage the clean skin to exfoliate lightly. dont start scrubbing.
4. Use the exfoliant. Use the same upwards circular strokes, and work in the little grains. Keep it up for a while, maybe a minute or so. Rinse with warm water
5. Use the cleanser again. rinse with cold water. and then use ice cubes.
6. Blot away any moisture and get out the moisturizer - i prefer to use Neutrogena Healthy Skin face lotion at this point, its more intense than a normal moisturizer, but really effective - despite the initial irritation.
7. Spot treatment.
If all this doesnt improve your skin - go see a dermatologist. Its beyond Auntie SaKi's powers.
WHITENING
Hooooo boy. This one is a pickle. Its quite amusing to me though. Lots of asian people are absolutely whining about wanting white skin. then the westerners (forgive me) all want tan skin. This is REALLY FUNNY for me. Since i'm asian...living in west..XD. I go around on summer days with long sleeves and parasols/umbrellas and people stare at my paleness~ XD lol
okay. heres the deal. Lolita are meant to be refined and doll-like. Since dolls are so pale, and since asians seem to think that pale-ness is a sign of wealth and prosperity (since in the olden days wealthy people didnt have to work in the fields, and stayed home therefore pale) we need to be pale too. This is not to say that if you are naturally dark-skinned you cant be lolita! i have seen many fine examples of Lolita, spanish, african american and they all pulled it off really well!
Tips:
The easiest way - stay in the shade. wear big hats (or bonnets ^^) and parasols. Wear long sleeves. not very difficult since we do that anyway.
Exfoliate regularly to reveal new white skin.
Lemons and Milk are very good natural skin whiteners. Just add them to your weekly routine. i prefer the lemon approach cos i can feel it working. Just rub it in after cleansing, let it dry and rinse off, then proceed with moisturiser
You can purchase high-quality products like 'Lancome - Blanc Expert' or 'Shiseido - UVwhite' but the whole series is ridiculously overpriced for my poor wallet to handle.
CONCLUSION
that is all the advice i have for you! good luck, and keep to the routine. As long as you keep it up, results will show!! Dont just let it pass and say 'i'll do it tomorrow'. try plugging the sink when you rinse off the cleanser - you'll be suprised how much dirt your skin gathers in one day alone.
Good Luck!
Okay. I'm gonna have to be straight here. When i first became interested in Lolita, i was a total and completely utter NOOB. i'm not really a gamer, but thats the only way i know how to put it. i was also a faker i guess. Xo yes, sakuya-san used to be incompetent too.
BWAHA not anymore. XD
anyway, i thought it might relieve or amuse, whatever, you to know that everyone starts off being a little naive and ignorant. Here are some rules that i broke.
(Rule #1) Anything with lace is lolita
Upon reflection of my newly acquired wardrobe (about two months later, when i started to understand it) and some of the amateur things i had made, i was so shocked at myself and my NOOBness. (i am aware that it is not always written in caps, thanks) i ended up selling them all online and had to start with scratch and -$50.
(Rule #2) Lolita is Cosplay
Ohhh boy was that a no-no. luckily i never told anyone thats what i thought, so i didnt get pounded on XD
(Rule #3) Lolita is only a fashion
When i first read the wikipedia article that stated 'true lolita do not think of it as a fashion trend, but as a way of life' i was like 'PFFSHHH what on earth?!' (yea...no, my etiquette skills hadnt kicked in).
(Rule #4) Lolita Etiquette
Lets just say i was not the happiest little lolita all the time. I admit i have a temper sometimes, so it was not easy to contain myself when people said things about me on the street.
Not really a rule, but it was so stupid i have to share
I started liking lolita about a week before my friends birthday. it was a costume party, so i wanted to dress lolita. I was less than accomplished at the lolita concept (as you can see). i drew a picture of what i wanted to go as. Back then, my drawing skills sucked and i was TERRIBLE at lolita obviously. I came across the picture about a week or so ago. it was complete and utter shock. IT WAS SOOOOO HORRIBLE. >.< i compensated by redrawing the picture (one of my habits, i draw new picture similar to old pictures to see how my style has changed) with a REAL lolita style. It was little red riding hood, incidentally.
the moral of this story is. even if someone seems like they are really good at something (not that i am saying i am ^^") they also began from NOOBidity. so just try to research about it, before you start running around screaming I'M LOLITA, I'M LOLITA. same with punk and other styles. I like punk style, but i dont like the sex pistols or anything, so i have never even considered wearing band shirts of theirs. DONT WEAR BAND SHIRTS OF BANDS YOU DONT KNOW.
as part of my friendly outreach program to all members ^^ i would like to try to get some of our members to become more actively involved!
please compose a POST and put it up on Dollhouse.
which do you like?
why do you like it the most?
do you have any favourite brands, accessories or other interests?
- make the Dollhouse more active. ^^
I'll go first.
I like punk and gothic lolita a lot. I also like classic and the aristocrat.
I like gothic and punk because it reflects my somewhat less than sweet personality at times ^^ (yes, sakuya-san has a bit of a temper) I like the deconstructed look, and trying to be perfect is sometimes really hard. I still follow the etiquette rules, but black just makes me happy. Btw, i am not emo...
I love brands, but they arent really available in New Zealand, which is good for my wallet. I like Black Peace Now, Putumayo, Milk (esp. milk boy ((yes, i am a girl))), h.naoto and sex pot revenge. i also like the sweeter ones, like metamorphose, and 'alice and the pirates' by baby the stars shine bright. I like blouses and skirts individually the best, and chokers too. Dresses are nice, its just that you cant mix and match them. Socks are fun too.
I am a Jrocker ^^ i love jrock and esp visual kei. My favourite band right now is Plastic Tree. I am still lamenting that Ryuutarou Arimura the lead singer (who also coined the phrase 'Kodona' from 'Kodoma Otona' (child adult) as his fashion style) is about...19 years older than me and their band formed when i was 1...XD i also like alice nine and miyavi.
Okay, theres an example, it doesnt have to be so long though!
guess what? i decided to start writing in black.. O.o lol. the pink was starting to do my head in. DX
so anyway, i have been studying really hard, even though i am taking my exams a year early...its pretty strange, i'm not that worried. i have science exams on three days next week, so i'm pretty worn out.
Random stuff that i do:
I really liked thinking up stories in my head since i was little, (i should totally become a manga-ka lol) and whenever i'm stressed, my brain is able to shut off and relive one of those little stories. its fun. its like having a portable dvd in your head, but you can change the plotline every single time. My parents tell me i have an overactive imagination. =D but thats good. i could totally sit and watch paint dry. ^^ oh yea. i did. XD when i was redoing my room. i think the paint fumes got to me though. tee hee.
My latest random story involves a girl and a boy (oh shock) that meet in a foreign country. I have to hammer out the details, but it should be rather short story. ok here goes:
Boy and Girl who really like each other, but cant stay together for long, make a pact to never tell each other their names, so their fairytale wont end (dont ask, too complicated) but on the last night, girl breaks the rules when the boy kisses her and he points to the moon 'tsuki desu' and she replies 'yoroshiku. yue desu' both smile. and then because i am mean, they never meet each other again!!
haha, you get the significance? Tsuki and Yue are the japanese and chinese words for moon. they both mean 'moon'. i dont know why i chose moon, i just thought it was pretty, i was also debating for a while about 'sora' and 'tian' but i think 'tsuki' and 'yue' is better.
heres a couple more lyrics i wrote: but just note here, please dont plaguerize. if you 'borrow' this material I'LL POKE YOU WITH CHOPSTICK. ^^ m'kay?
#1 its short, but sweet i think, it plays on my love of using the phrase 'Ashita Tenki Ni Naare'
TOMORROW
As we stand
on the shoreline
past the lights of the people
in our own world
'i'm leaving' you say
it breaks my heart
'tomorrow' you say
it tears my heart
Water meets earth
waves meet sand
i comtemplate a life
without you
impossible
but tomorrow you leave
so i must savour my last hours with you
until the moment they end
we bask in the dying sun
bright red flames across the sea
across the shore
across our paths
It looks so beautiful
and i know in my heart
tomorrow will be a better day
ashita tenki ni naare
#2. i like rain.
SEASON OF RAIN:
Its time for the rain
wash away out past, our sins
come to cleanse the world
pure and clean
all that is beautiful
in the rain
children dance in puddles
without a care of the future
the heavens open
and the rain falls down to earth
is it the rain i see?
reflected in your azure eyes
or the sadness
that causes those tears to fall
one with the rain
tell, so that i may share
the burden of your heart
let me help you
walk with you
down the paths of your past
the heavens open up
and the rain falls down to earth
can you not trust me?
'somethings cannot be shared'
can you not trust me?
do you doubt me?
rain falls...
steadily to the stones
as the street fills with rain,
my heart fills with doubt
the season of rain
so dear to my heart
so melancholy and serene
wash away the past
the dirt
look to the heavens
and lose yourself
in the neverending downpour
of sweet rain.
Hello, little mushrooms.
I composed a list of all the books that i want to read and probably (sakuya speak for definitely...) buy also. just thought they might brighten up your winter's day. (although its summer for me. XD i win. ^^)
They arent in any order, but here you go:
1. Anne of Green Gables - L.M.Montgomery
2. A Little Princess - Frances Burnett
3. Arabian Night
4. Black Beauty - Anna Sewell
5. David Copperfield - Charles Dickens
6. The Happy Prince - Oscar Wilde
7. Heidi - Johanna Spyri
8. Little Women (and sequels) - Louisa May Alcott
9. Robin Hood - Howard Pyle
10. Peter Pan - J.M. Barrie
11. Pollyanna - Eleanor H. Porter
12. Railway Children - E. Nesbit
13. The Secret Garden (really good. i loved it.) - Frances Burnett
14. What Katy Did (and sequels) - Susan Coolidge
15. Wind in the Willows - Kenneth Graham
16. Wizard of Oz - L. Frank Baum
17. The Hundred Dresses (its not well known, but a really good story) - Eleanor Estes.
18. Treasure Island - forgot the author...-_-
Hope this helps ^^ and may i recommend, try hunting around in second hand shops, or even better, second hand book shops for classical editions, with leather covers etc, instead of storebought paperbacks. Just this little difference is really distinctive if you decide to start collecting, as i have. It makes a bookshelf look so pretty, you could even go as far as to get a special bookshelf, with carved posts and things, instead of the hammered and glued hardboard stuff.
Good Luck!! please let me know how you get on. ^^
Hello, my little cupcakes ( i am having lots of fun making up names..^^)
Exams are near~~~ boooooo. So i will be away for a lot of next week, WARUI. Thus, i need volunteerssssssss. ^^
Sorry about inactivity too, I really have been busy DX. So, once again, i am asking for people to volunteer their own experience or skills. ^^ ~ It doesnt have to be a 'how to' guide, you could just remark about something that happened to you, or something that you are happy about ^^
Contact me if you have any ideas, contribution is the key to success, little dolls. ^^
Well, now that i have your attention...xD
This is just a post about me...and my love of classical literature. I really love reading old books, especially those lovely leather bound ones with gilded edges and fluer-de-lis designs...ahhhhhh so lolita. ^^
Right now, my favourite authors/poets are John Clare, Edgar Allan Poe and Robert Lee Frost. ^^ I recently bought a leather bound and gilded book, the full and complete works of Edgar Allan Poe, i am so happy about that! yay~
I think that classical literature is a testament to what man has accomplished and what he has learnt to accept and understand. Perhaps it is its ornate 'flowery' language that i adore, but i just find that it is so elegant, not like modern novels of make-believe nonsense. not that i am bad-mouthing harry potter fans...^^"
I am trying to find some more authors that i love, these are only a few, if you have any that you'd like to reccommend, that would help a lot ^^.
- Sakuya
Sorry for not posting lately, my little flying monkies. (and apologies for the absence of photos - Vox wont let me uploas?)
Seeing as Christmas is coming, i thought it would be appropriate to post about buying Lolita-themed presents for yourself (which is really really fun *nod nod*) and for your friends (part of lolita ettiquette states that a Lolita should be generous and giving - I'll make a list...eventually >.>) - this is the most important part - ON A BUDGET. I love those lolita shops as much as the next (lolita) girl, however, my wallet is starting to feel dreadfully light T.T so i came up with this for lolita on budgets.
First, i want to list a couple of places you could find great stuff for yourself - through purchasing things.
♥ Second Hand shops. - This is by far the best place to find lolita goods on a tight budget. Where i live, there are many places such as this, where cast-off teasets and old classical books are dumped carelessly. In this case, another man's trash is really our treasure. My favourite second hand shop goes by the name of 'the Paperbag Princess' i visit it every week, and there is always a lolita item waiting to be found. Most of my tea-sets are found from these shops too. You could also 'doctor' any items that you like.
♥ Book shops - This is rather a different idea, but remember that Lolita does not stop at just CLOTHING. ^^ Lolita is a lifestyle, not just cosplay - i really dislike it when people say that. Some lolita essentials are certainly lace, dolls, shoes, bags, etc etc, but what about the smaller things? Books are a great treasure trove of knowledge after all. You could choose from manga - Rozen Maiden or Paradise Kiss (although i am strange and revel in Shounen. YEA -BUJINKAN) or instruction books - Victorian Cross-stitching, pattern making. Lolita manuals are of course, an excellent resource, although i myself dont own any. ^^ Look to the Dollhouse's book list for some examples. Not only this, but remember lolita are supposed to be little victorian girls, this means that you should invest some time in classical literature. Put down Harry Potter and pick up Alice in Wonderland and Pride and Prejudice. Although, please forgive me if i have gotten the Eras mixed up, i just like all classical literature, so it doesnt matter much to me ^^ the best place to get classical literature books are second hand book shops - you can of course get them from big stores, but the thing i love most about classical books are the antique covers, which you can only find at second-hand stores - it just feels so Lolita to me!! I am very very very happy today because i was able to purchase the Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe (my FAVOURITE AUTHOR) for only NZ$10. It is leather bound and gilded with elegant designs and also the edges of every leaf are gold. ^^ SCORE! (wow, i ranted a long time on books...)
♥ Mainstream Shops - Ehhhhh these shops bore me. I just see the same things every single day and on everyone. However, i must admit that you can get some lolita essentials here with a little bit of sewing and effort. Buy a blouse or t-shirt and add lace, ribbons etc to your hearts content. Look through some of the brand named' photos in the Dollhouse (or my) album for inspiration. If you find a Lolita skirt, good for you!! Its quite hard to, but punk ones are quite easy to find - dont forget to add lace, or you might get mislabeled...like we always do...-_-. Dont forget that you can always dye things or add stuff, so look for shape and fit rather than anything else i think is the best advice. If you happen to find something lacey that you can tailor, thats great too. The most valuable lolita item that i can think of getting from these shops is a Broderie Anglaise skirt. I have one in white, and i often use it either as a petticoat - peeking out or as a skirt itself. Dont forget the generalized lolita rule - 2 inches above the knee max.
♥ Internet - i would again, discourage lolita-themed sites, there are many, i am sure, but think about all the shipping and costs for brnad names DX it makes me woozy. I personally find great satisfaction in finding something so distinctly lolita without it being called lolita, and likewise a great great drop in price. I would use a generalised trading site specific to your country. For NZ and Australia, trademe is a good option, i think. I use this to sell my lolita items, at rather low prices. I wouldnt suggest Ebay, registration fees, payment stuff...ahhh its annoying. >.<
♥ Craft Fairs and Craft shops - please, dont do this if you are certain you cant sew. it will result in very painful pin-pricks without someone to help teach you. lol. I learned the hard way, although it is possible to learn through books, it takes a long time. Good place to find ribbons, lace and fabric - price may be an issue depending on quality. Stay away from synthetics (the make you sweat) and see-through (not a hooker fashion, people). the best thing about making your own outfits is that you arent confined to work with something, and you may not be able to find exactly what you want otherwise. ...I bought sooo much lace and ribbons today....O.o
♥ Other possibilities for a larger budget -
Antique Shops - furniture and furnishings, maybe even some antique textiles, linen, handkerchiefs, doilies.
Lolita Shops - you lucky devils...
Internet Shops - the shipping will cost you dearly.
...Thats all i can think of for now...
Possible lolita-style presents for your friends and family (on a budget)
♥ Food - cookies in a ribbon-tied bag are a great idea - maybe use cookie cutter type cookies and make a theme. Cakes, tea, bento boxes or even cook a meal for them.
♥ Tea-sets - for any people interested in traditional things, maybe a lolita friend or just grandmother.
♥ Books - i think this is a great versatile idea, you could gift-wrap some lovely modern novels for friends, or get classics for them, by their favourite author. Maybe include an embroidered bookmark? ^^
♥ Handmade Items - ranging from bookmarks to pillow-covers. skirts to headdresses. Look for something that is personalized for that special friend.
♥ Random things - Dolls, lace, ribbons, special toys, little pieces of jewellery, just things that you feel are good for them!!
SPECIAL NOTES
♥ For that added Lolita effect, wrap presents beautifully (maybe with help? lol) and in a theme, for everyone. I have white/red candy-striped wrapping paper, but you could find many different things. I think i could find some help sites about wrapping and things - i will include it into another post later on.
♥ If you plan to give all your presents to just your close friends, why not extend that? Give all lolita a good name by baking an extra batch of small cookies and present them nicely - you could just use little clear plastic bags - for candy, and cheaper paper ribbon. Hand these out to your classmates, or work friends (you could give them to strangers, but i think i would be cautious if someone i didnt know gave me food).
♥ If you are going to bring the presents to your friends at the same time, why not put it all into a basket, decorated with lace and ribbons? Thats what i am going to do.
♥ Dont forget to give Christmas cards!!! Although, sometimes i find that its hard to find (aha XD) the perfect lolita-style card, so either make your own, with kits or do what i would do, cut up pieces of card and use stamps on the corners, with designs, or a stencil. Then glue or sew some lace around the edges, and bows somewhere. Write personalized messages to each friend, dont just write the same message, it doesnt show thoughtfulness.
♥ Please dont give your friends bad gag presents. Its fine if its something silly and funny, but presents in bad taste are just crass and vulgar. A lolita is refined and well-mannered, respectful above all.
♥†♥ New Stuff coming up ♥†♥
Hi everyone!! ^^
Just to let you know whats coming up (possibly) in Dollhouse

Saying Goodbye - Knit your own scarf or blanket!!
Sakuya (thats me!) - Lolita Headdress.
[- If anyone else would like to volunteer please let me know and i will schedule you a week ^^]
